The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) organized the event.

The four-day intensive program brought together 39 Muslim high school students from across California, selected from a competitive statewide pool. These aspiring leaders participated in workshops on community organizing, leadership development, and public speaking, gaining essential skills and knowledge to prepare them for future roles in government, law, and media.

A key highlight of this year’s MYLP was the mock legislative session, where participants took on the roles of legislators, debating public policy issues and preparing bills to present on the State Capitol Assembly Floor. This practical exercise provided the students with a deep understanding of the legislative process in California.

Participants also had the unique opportunity to engage with professionals who work directly within the legislative and governmental spheres. The “Working Under the Dome” panel featured Deputy State Controller Hasib Emran and multiple capitol staffers. The discussion offered advice on how to effectively advocate for policy changes, the importance of civic engagement, and the various pathways to working within the government.

In a statement, CAIR San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) Executive Director Zahra Billoo said, “This year’s MYLP participants have demonstrated remarkable dedication and drive. It’s incredible to see these young individuals embrace the opportunity to learn and engage with the legislative process firsthand. Their energy and vision for the future are truly inspiring.”

“The Muslim Youth Leadership Program provides invaluable opportunities for our youth to learn about leadership and advocacy,” added CAIR-CA CEO Hussam Ayloush. “We are dedicated to preparing these young individuals to take on tomorrow’s challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”
